Mamachel’s Top Movie Songs of Our Generation

Hey,

You guys remember when the Titanic was sinking and you heard that flute or oboe or whatever the baxide it was start playing then Celine Dion started singing “Every night in my dreams”? You remember that? That song was on EVERY station and don’t front you KNOW the words to that song. Well it wasn’t just the Titanic that had a song or soundtrack that crossed over into mainstream and got stuck in our head. I will attempt to make a decent list of top movie songs of our time. My sometimes idea muse, AndrĂ©’s ( aka @Dremaican ) list can be found below mine so we can see how many people identify with either of them. There are some similarities, but for the most part they differ quite a bit, especially outside of the Top 15. So without further ado…get to reading, peeps!:

Mamachel’s List:

1. Titanic- My Heart Will Go On: This one is pretty much a given. At this point I’m not certain I liked the song or if I was brain washed.

2. Armageddon – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing: Listen, the fact that this was written by the star’s father and also that the movie was so emotional, it made me bawl like they killed my pet in that movie. NO sah! I even forgot about the meteor! One thing for certain if that was MY father, my boo would’ve been extra crispy.

3. Bodyguard- Always Love You: When I mention Whitney Houston in a blog my heart hurts. Every one has tried to hold that note at the end of this song. Maybe if she had a Kevin Costner in real life she wouldn’t be where she is right now. I could see him giving Bobby Brown a throat chop.

4. Lion King – Dis whole bloodclaat soundtrack wins! From Hakuna Matatah to Can You Feel The Love Tonight. I loved it!

5. Dirty Dancing – Time of My Life: Listen when Patrick “tight pants” Swayze said “Nobody puts baby in the corner” <- Every teenage girl started making plans to go to camp next summer. *fans self* RIP Patrick *sniffle

6. Rocky - Eye of the Tiger: *fist pump* I don’t care if you’re getting ready to have sex, eat your girlfriend’s cooking, run up the stairs, ask for a raise/promotion, ask a girl out or do that extra set of crunches. The FACT is, Eye Of The Tiger is adrenaline in a song. Best believe I’m bopping my head while typing this *fly kick*

7. Dangerous Minds – Gangstas Paradise: Coolio was the ish!! That hairstyle though will never be okay lol

8. Ghost – Unchained Melody: Tell the TRUTH!!! When Whoopi and Demi and Patrick finally perfected that Obeah/Voodoo meeting and the light come out and the song came on. We were ALL emotional. Lawd I need to watch this again… Whew

9. The Little Mermaid – Kiss Di Girl/Under The Sea: Sebastian the crab was a smooth trinidadian if I ever did see one.) That song was PURE pimpage. Under The sea was a nice calypso-esque song that very much showed off Sebastian’s West Indian flair with the steel pans and all. Disney, this was a good look icon smile Mamachels Top Movie Songs of Our Generation .

10. Waiting to Exhale <- This whole damn soundtrack!!! 'Nuff said

11. Harder they come - Harder They Come Title Track: Listen original country come from town I have a soft spot for this movie. It’s a cult classic and shows how one can attain and lose their dream in a heartbeat. I love this song and also the placement of it in the movie because its like All odds are against him but he has this one chance. Let’s think of it as the Jamaican “eye of the Tiger” listening to the words of this song has brought me out of many dark moods. “The harder they come, the harder they’ll fall”

12. Pretty Woman – Pretty Woman Title Track: Although this is essentially Beauty and The Beast with a Beauty No Beast and a Prostitute that pretty woman song gets me skanking ANYWHERE. *mercy*

13. Set it off – Don’t Let Go Love: Yep this was proper. Jeez Vivica pre botox and plastic surgery was sooo pretty

14. Flashdance – Maniac/What A Feeling: Listen this was during the time of FAME I wanna live foreverr!! I wanted to do that fast foot knee high dance she did but alllm my asthma…Anyways this movie was hot and so was the song.

15. To Sir With Love – To Sir With Love Title Track: The original and all other copies have been cute. To have a black lead actor at the time was very big and Sidney Pottier did it. But the song was a chart topper.

16. Grease – You’re The One That I Want
17. Footloose – Footloose Theme Song
18. Beetlejuice – Day-O
19. Moulin rouge – Lady Marmalade
20. Ghostbusters – Ghostbuster’s Theme Song
21. My Girl – My Girl
22. Top Gun- Take My Breath Away
23. Evita – Don’t Cry For ME Argentina
24. Beauty & The Beast – Beauty and the Beast (Angela Lansbury)
25. Sound of Music – The Hills Are Alive

Now, my list is based solely on my personal choice, as well as, song popularity, mass appeal and lasting impact (ie. even thugs find themselves singing/humming some of these songs at times). If I were to pick my actual list most of you probably would even know the movies they came from. Anyway here goes!:

Dre’s List:

1. Armageddon – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing: It edges out Titanic for me because I was laughing throughout that movie. This one actually had me genuinely sympathising with the characters.

2. Titanic – My Heart Will Go On: This song will have me singing it in my head. But i keep a screw face while it’s playing so i don’t give myself away. Nah mean?

3. Bodyguard – Always Love You: The vocal range that Whitney Houston displays in this song leaves me no choice but to respect it.

4. Batman Forever – Kiss From A Rose: Despite the tribal markings, this song shows Seal’s game is strong. I mean, the man is basically forming a little football team over there with Heidi Klum (Samuel)

5. Space Jam – I Believe I Can Fly: Undoubtedly one of the most inspirational songs that has ever been recorded. I need say no more.

6. Lion King – Hakuna Matata : (Actually I cosign what Mamachel said about this pick lol)

7. Rocky – Eye of the Tiger : I spontaneously break out in shadowboxing moves whenever I hear this song. It’s unavoidable really. Jabs, Uppercuts, Hooks…I just get the urge to knock somebody out.

8. Dangerous Minds – Gangsta’s Paradise: Yow! I learned the shit out of this song when it came out. At the time, I knew this song better that any of the school work I was supposed to be learning.

10. Dirty Dancing – Time of My Life : This movie was clothed porn. No one can tell me otherwise. Seeing this, as a young chap, was the closest I got to actual porn…until cable and with it Cinemax. Ya’ll know what I’m talking ’bout -__-

11. Harder they come – Harder They come: I’m not sure my brother was supposed to let me see this. But the movie forever changed my view of the song which I used to hear all the time before I even knew there was a movie.

12. Wayne’s World – Bohemian Rhapsody : Responsible for my introduction to the group Queen. It was all over from there. My favourite rock group of all time.

13. Ghost – Unchained Melody: My uncle’s house is the first place i watched this movie. Watching with my sister became somewhat of a tradition, more so out of necessity since he didn’t have cable.

14. 8 Mile – Lose Yourself : I don’t know if anybody else gets goosebumps or a shiver when they hear a song that speaks to them but certain songs have given me that feeling before and this is one of them.

15. Pretty Woman – Pretty Woman Title Track: Judge me all you want, but this is a damn good movie. It’s one of those chick flicks you need to be familiar with if you wanna get in them draws. Trust me.

16. Grease – You’re The One That I Want
18. Waiting to Exhale – Exhale
19. Flashdance – Maniac/What Feeling
20. Beetlejuice – Day-O
21. The Little Mermaid – Under The Sea/Kiss Di Girl
22. Ghostbusters – Ghostbuster’s Theme Song
23. My Girl – My Girl
24. Beauty & The Beast – Beauty and the Beast (Angela Lansbury)
25. Top Gun- Take My Breath Away

Well guys, it’s Mamachel and I’ve re-taken control :-p. Anyway, that’s it for the lists! We welcome your comments and suggestions. Let’s have fun with this! I’d really love to hear my readers’ views and opinions.

Faith & Love,
